The Tsou are a tribe in Taiwan that believes its people are blessed by the Guardian (守護神) of Nature. For years, they have always had enough animals to hunt, but they could not hunt in a special place called “Danayiku,” which means the “Land of Life.” There, all of the animals are protected by gods. It was even said that the Guardian of Nature would change himself into a white deer and walk around Danayiku.
However, Avai, the best hunter of the Tsou, didn’t believe this story. He decided to go hunting in Danayiku to show his people that this story was a lie. When Avai reached Danayiku, he noticed the animals lived in peace there. After a while, he saw a beautiful white deer. Without hesitation, he decided to kill it to prove that the story was not true. But when Avai tried to shoot an arrow, he lost his energy. He tried again, but the same thing happened. Finally, he gave one last try. At the moment, his arrow stopped in the air before it could hit the deer. Then, it turned around and hit Avai in his stomach.
Later, when the other Tsou found Avai, he was dying. In his final words, he told them that the story was true. As a result, the Tsou decided to tell Avai’s story to their children as a warning. From then on, they lived in harmony with nature and kept respecting what the Guardian of Nature has done for them.
